Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get to The Retreat Pinhão in Santo Antão?
Santo Antão has no airport, so the journey is part of the adventure. Fly into São Vicente (Cesária Évora Airport, VXE), then take the one-hour ferry from Mindelo to Porto Novo with CV Interilhas or Nôs Ferry, which run morning and afternoon sailings daily. We can arrange your transfer from the port. The last stretch is a short walk up a mountain path, and we carry your luggage for you. If your flight lands late, stay a night in Mindelo and catch the morning ferry.
What is included in my stay?
Every stay includes a traditional breakfast made with produce from our gardens. Lunch, dinner and packed lunches for hiking are available on request.
What are the check-in and check-out times?
Check-in is from 2:00 PM and check-out is by 11:00 AM. Need different times? Let us know in advance and we’ll do our best to help.
What is your cancellation policy?
More than 14 days before arrival, you get a full refund. Between 7 and 14 days, you get a 50% refund or can move to another date, if available. Less than 7 days before arrival, there is no refund. As a small, remote hotel, we can’t easily fill late cancellations.
Do you cater for special diets?
Yes, we cater for multiple diets including vegetarian, vegan and halal diets. Please tell us when you book.
When is the best time to visit?
Any time of year, thanks to Cape Verde’s warm, stable climate. Autumn brings lush green mountains after the summer rains, while October to Easter offers winter sunshine. We close each year from May to mid-June for holidays and maintenance.
Is the Retreat suitable for children?
Yes, children are welcome with parental supervision at all times. Our mountain setting is a wonderful place for families to explore nature together.
Is The Retreat accessible for guests with reduced mobility?
Not at the moment. Access is on foot along a mountain path, but we’re working on road access. Please contact us to discuss your needs, and we’ll always do what we can to help.
Is The Retreat eco-friendly?
Yes. We hold a Green Tourism Silver award for sustainability, community and wellbeing. We also grow our own vegetables and raise our own animals, so you can enjoy fresh, local food while knowing your stay supports a greener way to travel.
Is The Retreat good for a digital detox?
Yes. Our mountain setting is a true switch-off zone, with fresh air, open views and a slow pace. Fast WiFi is available if you need it, but many guests choose to disconnect and simply enjoy being here.
